A forgotten incident. A touching memory. Something sort of beautiful.
He was a happy drunk. But he looked really excited when he asked me this.
"Want to see the baby finches?" Conrad didn't wait for an answer as he began to reach up into Richie's shed. I got closer.
I guess I was drunk too, because what I saw almost made me cry.
"Shhhhhhhh," he hushed me quietly. I put my fingers over my mouth and glanced inside the helmet he held in his hands.
There was a nest.
Little pieces of speckled egg shells were the first thing I saw. And then I saw them, the life that bloomed from these eggs.
The baby finches, so young and fragile. So fresh and new.
A few seconds went by, but it felt like longer.
And then he put them back after saying "shhhhhhhh" one more time. I kept my fingers over my mouth until he closed the shed doors.
"That was amazing."
